Rene Girard says that monarchs and people in power can be susceptible to scapegoating- I'm wondering about the circumstances of Gough Whitlam's dismissal- that was a pile-on for sure. Or (regardless of what you think of her politics) the ridiculous articles that were written about Julia Gillard, comparing her to both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth (I remember this as I was doing a Shakespeare course around the time!)
